What is Reflexology?
It is an ancient healing art believed to have been practised by the Ancient Egyptians, Chinese, Indians and the American Indians.
Eunice Ingham is called ‘The Mother of Reflexology’ as she pioneered the mapping of the feet and wrote several books on the subject. Doreen Bayly, one of her students, brought reflexology to the UK in the 1960’s.
As with acupuncture and acupressure, reflexology recognises zone theory, that is the body is divided into 10 longitudinal zones.
Reflexology works on the principle that every organ and system within the 10 zones has an equivalent ‘reflex’ point on the feet and hands.
There are 7,000 plus nerve endings on the feet which feedback information to the spinal cord and the brain. This stimulation brings about the relaxation response via the parasympathetic nervous system, providing the right environment for change to take place for the client or patient. During a reflexology treatment points on the feet (or hands) are stimulated using a specific pressure massage technique.
Reflexology helps the body to enter into a deep state of relaxation and this allows the body to stimulate its own healing properties and processes.

Treatments last around 60 minutes. The first treatment will last around 90 minutes because it includes a full health consultation. This is necessary so that the reflexologist can get a full picture of the client’s health and lifestyle, and can recommend an appropriate treatment programme.
Reflexology is suitable for everyone, from young babies to the elderly, mothers-to-be and the terminally ill. This complementary therapy is a wonderful way to help heal physical ailments, achieve peace of mind and calm the spirit.
It is a potent therapy which can help with many disorders, such as:
| · |
Stress and anxiety |
| · |
Back disorders |

Arthritis |
| · |
Asthmas and allergies |
| · |
Lack of vitality |
| · |

Reflexology can also help the terminally ill as gentle massage is both comforting and reassuring. This therapy is also able to help those with chronic conditions.
