Frequently Asked Questions
How can I benefit from a reflexology treatment?
Reflexology is a safe, natural therapy and may aid in the relief of a wide range of acute or chronic conditions. It brings about the relaxation response providing the right environment for change to take place within the body.
Does reflexology tickle?
No, it doesn’t. The reflexologist uses firm pressure on the reflex points.
Will it hurt?
No, the therapist will not use excess pressure so that treatment becomes painful. If you do feel any discomfort or tenderness you must let the therapist know straightaway as this usually indicates reflex imbalance.
I don’t like anyone touching my feet.
The good news is that we have the same reflex points on our hands as we do on our feet. This means that a reflexologist can give the same treatment using the client’s hands instead.
What can I expect during the treatment?
The first session lasts about 90 minutes. The reflexologist will begin by talking to you about your present and past health, lifestyle and emotional well-being. He/she will explain reflexology and what to expect.
You will be asked to remove your shoes, socks, stockings. You will lie down and make yourself comfortable. The therapist will start by checking your feet for any obvious signs of imbalance. He/she will then massage your feet for a few minutes before starting to work the reflexes. Once all the reflexes have been worked, the therapist will again spend a few minutes giving your feet a slow and relaxing massage.
It is up to you whether or not you want to talk to the therapist during the treatment. Usually patients quickly pass into a state of deep relaxation and have even been known to fall asleep.
How will I feel after treatment?
Everyone responds differently, depending on their heath and state of mind. Most people experience a deep sense of well-being, calmness and peace. Occasionally clients report feeling tearful or lethargic but this is a natural part of the healing process and passes quickly. You should tell your reflexologist about any reaction or after-effect of treatment.
It is important to drink lots of water after a treatment and to avoid any stimulating food and drink.
How many treatments are recommended?
This will depend on the individual however a course of four to six treatments on a weekly basis is suggested to gain an appreciation of how reflexology works for that particular person in their specific circumstances. In some cases more treatments may be necessary but for many the space between treatments is increased, leading to a three monthly or six monthly treatment for health maintenance.
