What is a complementary therapy?

The principles and practices of complementary medicine have long been recognized as an effective way of resolving health problems.

A complementary therapy takes an holistic approach to achieving and maintaining good health.  Instead of focusing on symptoms or illness or specific parts of the body, this ancient approach considers the whole person and the relationship between body, mind, and spirit – hence the term holistic.  Complementary therapies focus on bringing about a physical state of relaxation and balance so that the body can begin to heal itself.

We achieve good health and wellness when the body, mind and spirit are balanced and working together in harmony.  Should any of these three elements become disturbed or out of balance for any length of time, then inevitably we will see or feel the effects – illness and/or disease.

Complementary therapists do not diagnose and do not claim to cure.  But we know that these therapies are very effective in helping people to achieve a state of wellness.   They are especially useful in managing the effects of stress and the impact stress has on us - physically and spiritually.

Many medical doctors recognize that complementary therapies have their place alongside conventional medicine, especially when it comes to managing conditions such as chronic fatigue, irritable bowel syndrome, migraine or back pain.

Complementary therapies should never be used as a substitute for conventional medical care or advice.  Anyone concerned about a health problem should always visit their GP first.   Complementary therapists do not diagnose.  A consultation should not take the place of medical advice from a doctor.
